The town of Grimsby has gone through many changes since its founding in 1787. What began as a small rural village of United Empire Loyalists became a centre for the manufacturing of farm equipment, furnaces, furniture and other metal work products, and eventually the heart of the fruit-growing industry of the Niagara Peninsula. Although Grimsby has experienced much growth in the last decade, room for expansion is limited by the natural boundaries of Lake Ontario and the Niagara Escarpment. Very few orchards remain within the city limits today.
